Uma geração cada vez menos Down

                               Antigamente, uma criança que tivesse Síndrome de Down – um distúrbio genético que afeta as áreas cognitiva, motora e comportamental, provoca dificuldade de abstração e lentidão no desenvolvimento mental – estava fadada a viver dentro de casa, ter uma vida muito limitada, engordar muito e morrer cedo. Os pais a mantinham dentro de casa, pois acreditavam que ela era muito frágil e incapaz de lidar com as circunstâncias da vida lá fora e também se sentiam inconformados ou com vergonha de terem gerado uma criança “com problemas”, que fisicamente e funcionalmente era diferente das outras crianças tidas como “normais” . Ledo engano!

A ciência ajudou a mudar o rumo da história dos portadores da Síndrome de Down ao mostrar que esse acidente genético, que na grande maioria das vezes acontece por acaso, limita, mas não impede ninguém de viver a felicidade e ter prazer na vida. Assim, com a compreensão, ajuda e incentivo da família, essa nova geração, cada vez menos Down (ou para baixo, conforme a gíria inglesa) está construindo uma nova história: estudam em escolas comuns e não mais em escolas para crianças especiais; saem sozinhas; passeiam; trabalham; atuam em novelas e em comerciais de televisão; praticam esportes; vivem muito mais; fazem planos para o futuro; namoram e até casam.

Vivendo mais e melhor

                               É preciso deixar o preconceito de lado para poder ver primeiro a criança e só depois perceber a sua condição de especial. É necessário entender o funcionamento dessa Síndrome – que deixou de ser vista como uma doença e sim como um acidente genético – para poder ajudar e incentivar o desenvolvimento dessas crianças, para que elas possam viver mais e melhor. É preciso entender que é a inclusão social que vai garantir que elas se tornem independentes, autônomas e cada vez mais integradas à comunidade.

Esse trabalho de inclusão social deve começar logo nos primeiros meses da vida, com a estimulação precoce (exercícios que facilitam o desenvolvimento integral da criança – físico, motor, intelectual e social). A evolução da criança dependerá da forma como for estimulada, por isso é necessário que se crie um ambiente que favoreça o seu desenvolvimento e a sua autonomia e que facilite o seu contato com o mundo lá fora. O isolamento só prejudica. Todos nós precisamos do contato com as outras pessoas para aprendermos, crescermos e amadurecermos, com elas não vai ser diferente – “as coisas estão no mundo, só que é preciso aprender”.

Ser diferente é normal

                               Para que as pessoas com Down possam ter uma vida cada vez mais próxima do “normal” é necessário que sejam incentivados a fazer coisas, que se sintam livres para tentar descobrir seus limites e aprender até onde eles podem ir; que sejam ouvidas sobre seus desejos e dificuldades, que aprendam a fazer escolhas – o que vestir, o que comer, pra onde querem ir, o que desejam fazer.

Se você tem um filho ou convive com algum portador da Síndrome de Down evite super protegê-lo pois ele não vai conseguir ter iniciativa e autonomia se as pessoas tentarem fazer as coisas por ele.Deixe-o tentar, o importante é que ele perceba que conta com seu apoio e ajuda,desde que seja necessário. Incentive-o a procurar fazer sozinho o que ele for capaz de fazer e isso se torna mais fácil se forem estabelecidas rotinas no seu cotidiano que respeitem suas necessidades, habilidades e capacidades.

Trocar experiência com familiares ou adultos cuidadores pode ajudar bastante a você entender as possibilidades e limitações de seu filho e passar a entender que ser diferente é normal.
